Sometimes the most meaningful moments begin with the simplest ideas.
Back in April, I received a message from Karla with an idea that immediately made me smile. She wanted to organize a Glam Day for the residents of Smithfield Lodge in Westlock and wondered if I’d be interested in photographing it.
My answer was an easy yes!!!
I thought it was such a wonderful idea, and I couldn’t wait to be part of something so special. Little did I know that this event would become one of the most rewarding photography experiences I’ve ever had.

The concept was simple but incredibly meaningful.
Residents signed up for the event, and everything else was taken care of. They were treated to professional hair and makeup, beautiful clothing, jewelry, fun props, and a professional portrait session. All they had to do was show up, relax, and enjoy being pampered.
After all, who doesn’t deserve to feel like a million dollars?
When the day finally arrived, it exceeded every expectation.

This amazing event came together because so many people donated their time, talents, and hearts.
The students from the R.F. Staples High School Cosmetology Program did an incredible job creating beautiful hairstyles and makeup looks for the residents. Their enthusiasm and kindness were just as beautiful as the transformations they created.
The amazing staff at Smithfield Lodge, along with an incredible group of volunteers, helped each resident choose robes, jewelry, and accessories that reflected their personalities. Every detail was thoughtfully planned to make each person feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated.
Watching everyone work together was just as inspiring as photographing the finished portraits.

The true measure of a successful event isn’t just the photographs, it’s the memories that remain long after the cameras are packed away.
Hearing that the residents are still talking about Glam Day months later says everything about the impact it had. It wasn’t simply another activity on the calendar—it became an experience they’ll remember.
To make the day even more meaningful, Smithfield Lodge later hosted an Appreciation Day where each resident received a beautifully printed 5×7 portrait from their Glam Day session. It was a thoughtful reminder that photographs are meant to be more than something we scroll past on a screen. They’re meant to be held, displayed, shared with loved ones, and treasured for years to come.
In a world where so many images live only on our phones or computers, there’s something incredibly special about holding a photograph in your hands. A printed portrait isn’t just a picture—it’s a memory you can touch, frame, pass down, and revisit for years to come. Long after social media posts are forgotten, those prints will continue to tell a story and remind each resident just how celebrated they were that day.

I’m incredibly excited to hear that another Seniors Glam Day is already being planned for the Pembina Lodge residents, and I can’t wait to be part of it.
It was an honour to work alongside such caring volunteers, the talented R.F. Staples Cosmetology students, and the wonderful staff who poured so much love into making this day unforgettable.
If there’s one thing this experience taught me, it’s that photography can be about so much more than creating beautiful pictures. Sometimes it’s about restoring confidence, creating connection, and giving someone the opportunity to feel truly celebrated and special.

This experience reminded me why I became a photographer in the first place.
Photography has the power to preserve memories, celebrate people, and capture moments that might otherwise be forgotten.
If you’re part of a seniors’ lodge, retirement community, or care home and have ever thought about organizing a Glam Day for your residents, I’d love to help bring that vision to life. These events create so much more than portraits—they create confidence, joy, connection, and memories that last a lifetime.
Sometimes the simplest ideas create the most unforgettable memories.
This was certainly one of them.
Moments like these are a beautiful reminder that photographs become more valuable with time. Whether it’s celebrating a senior’s life story or documenting the everyday moments with the people you love, professional photography creates keepsakes that can be treasured for generations. If you’re looking for more insight into why investing in family portraits matters, I enjoyed this blog post from my friend Jillian on Calgary family photography and why family photography is worth the investment.
