There’s something pretty special about fall in Westlock. The crisp mornings, warm afternoon light, golden leaves, and beautiful colours make it one of my favourite times of year for family photos. But as beautiful as the scenery is, the real reason to book a family session is much more important: your family is changing every day.

The kids are growing. Personalities are developing. Haircuts change, little hands get bigger, and before you know it, the stage of life you’re in right now is gone.

Family photos give you a way to freeze those moments—not just for the photo on your wall, but for the memories that come with it.

Mom, Get in the Picture!

One of the biggest reasons I love family photography is that it gets Mom out from behind the camera.

Moms are often the ones taking the photos. We photograph the kids, the birthday parties, the vacations, the first day of school and all the little everyday moments. Years later, there can be hundreds of photos of the family—but Mom is missing from so many of them.

You deserve to be in the memories, too.

Don’t worry about whether you feel perfectly comfortable in front of the camera. You don’t need to know how to pose, and you don’t have to be a model. That’s my job! I’ll guide you through the session and capture the genuine interactions, laughs, hugs and little moments between you.

Because one day, your children won’t just want photos of themselves.

They’ll want photos of you together.

Why Fall in Westlock, Alberta?

Fall in Westlock is absolutely beautiful, and it gives us so many options for family photos.

The changing leaves provide gorgeous natural colour and texture, while the fields, trails and open spaces create beautiful backdrops. The softer fall colours also make it easy to create images that feel warm and timeless.

And let’s be honest—there’s something pretty magical about everyone wearing sweaters, boots and layers while walking through the leaves together.

Fall sessions also tend to have a relaxed, cozy feeling. We can let the kids run, explore, play and interact rather than expecting everyone to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera.

Some of my favourite images aren’t the perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones where everyone is laughing, Dad is tickling someone, the kids are running toward you, or Mom and Dad sneak in a quick hug.

Those are the moments you’ll remember.

What Should You Wear?

Choosing outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!

Think coordinating, not matching.

You don’t need everyone wearing the exact same colour or outfit. Instead, choose colours and textures that work well together.

For fall, I love earthy and warm tones such as:

• Cream, beige and ivory
• Rust and burnt orange
• Mustard and golden yellow
• Olive and sage green
• Brown and camel
• Burgundy and deeper reds
• Navy and denim

Start with one outfit.

If you’re struggling to figure out where to begin, choose one person’s outfit first, often Mom’s, and build everyone else’s clothing around it.

Look for complementary colours rather than having everyone wear the same shade.

Add layers and texture.

Fall is the perfect season for layers! Sweaters, cardigans, jackets, scarves, boots and textured fabrics add visual interest to your images and can also help everyone stay comfortable if the weather is chilly.

Think knits, denim, linen, corduroy and soft sweaters.

Avoid overly busy patterns.

Small patterns, large logos and neon colours can distract from the people in the photograph. Simple clothing with subtle patterns and textures tends to photograph beautifully.

And don’t be afraid of neutrals. Creams, browns, soft greens and denim look fantastic against Alberta’s fall landscape.

Most importantly: wear something you feel good in.

If you’re uncomfortable in your outfit, you’re probably going to feel uncomfortable in your photos. Choose clothing that fits well, allows you to move and feels like you.

Don’t Wait for the “Perfect” Time

It’s easy to think, We’ll do family photos when the kids are a little older, or I’ll lose some weight first, or Life is just too busy right now.

But your family doesn’t stay the same while you wait.

The missing tooth, the messy hair, the toddler giggles, the way your kids still reach for your hand—those things are part of your family’s story right now.

And that’s exactly what makes them worth photographing. Next thing you know, they are all grown up!
